Science and faith – conflicting or complementary narrative?
Science and faith – conflicting or complementary narrative?
Research carried out in UK primary and secondary schools shows that many young people think they must reject religious faith if they want to accept science and that science and faith are at odds. Historically, few children’s resources have been available to bridge the apparent gap between the science taught in school and the ways Bible stories are often told, so it is perhaps understandable that so many reach this conclusion.
In truth of course, the Christian view is that nothing in this wonderful cosmos is outside of God’s domain, including the nature and behaviour of the creation itself, and there is now a major drive from many mainstream Christian and religious organisations to address this issue by providing good children’s resources that present a complementary, rather than a conflicting narrative between science and faith. God’s Cosmic Cookbook is part of this initiative.

God and the Big Bang
With its origins in the Manchester Diocese, the ‘God and the Big Bang’ (GATBB) project was set up in 2013 to deliver science and faith workshops and support to schools and cathedrals across the UK.
Now located in one of the UK’s main centres for science-engaged theology at Durham university, GATBB continues to run their fantastic activity-led workshops around the country.
They also provide simple resources to help parents, teachers and youth group leaders stimulate their own discussions.
BioLogos: God’s word, God’s world
Famous for leading the Human Genome Project, top biologist Francis Collins published his best-selling book The Language of God in 2006, describing his journey from atheism to Christian belief and showing that, far from conflicting with the Bible, science actually enhances faith.
The overwhelming and positive response to the book, highlighted a need and BioLogos was set up to facilitate discussion of big questions and big ideas in conjunction with some of the top Christian minds in science and theology.
This recent article is an example of BioLogos’ work supporting kids and young people.
