A New Year Resolution

I’m not a big believer in new year resolutions, but, if I was to have to choose one for 2025 it would be not to get discouraged by the noisy Christian faction who seem to view modern science as somehow a threat to our faith.

You might wonder why this bothers me – it‘s not a salvation issue. True, but it’s still important, not least for children – the subject of November’s blog… If we leave kids thinking they need to choose between faith and science, we risk them walking away.

…In fact, leaving faith unreconciled with modern science leaves fertile ground for atheist propaganda at any age. Science describes the real world. The picture it gives is always incomplete but gets more amazing as our knowledge grows. What use is a faith that can’t accommodate reality and why would we not want the extra insight science gives us of the immensity God??

Christian fearfulness of science is also surprising for all sorts of reasons... As science is simply the study of our miraculous, God-created universe, how can it undermine God or faith in God? God ‘wrote the book of nature’ just as much as he inspired scripture; studying it cannot help but aid our understanding… help us build a fuller picture of our creator God.

It is also fundamentally important to love God with all our minds and to honour the truth … Scientific fields from geology to astrophysics and from genetics to chemistry all point to an ancient universe. Those at the cutting-edge of these sciences – Christian and non – share the same common understanding of the state of the art. Yet those who advocate for a 6-day creation 6,000 years ago talk about ‘atheist conspiracies’ and are wilfully selective in the alternative ‘scientific evidence’ they focus on.

Hopefully, most of us know enough about ‘alternative facts’ nowadays to steer well clear. No one who believes in a loving and righteous God should go down that road, least of all in God’s name!

Elizabeth Cole

After becoming a Christian as a child and training as a Chemist at university, Liz has spent a successful and happy career in the analytical instrument industry specialising in techniques for measuring toxic gases and bad smells.

She is a firm believer that science and faith both honour our creator God and is enthusiastic to help Christians without a science background see that there is nothing to fear from modern science.

Published in 2023, Liz’s first book, God’s Cosmic Cookbook, is written for 8-13 year olds. With gentle humour throughout, it presents God the chef talking young readers through how to make their own universe at home step by step - from the Big Bang to people!
